GENERAL SUMMARY:  The resource nurse of the Operating Room is a Registered Professional Nurse who possesses clinical and leadership skills relative to the needs of the Operating Room.

Under the direction of the Nurse Manager oversees the RN's, surgical technicians, and ancillary staff in the performance of their daily duties; and coordinates the running of the operating room schedule, when not performing OR Staff Nurse duties.

PRINCIPAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Maintains a safe and clean work environment.

  • Coordinates the running of the Operating Room schedule:

  • Ensures patients from nursing units arrive in the OR at the appropriate time.

  • Adjust times and rooms of cases to facilitate the maximum utilization of the schedule and safe delivery of patient care, (i.e., will keep down time to a minimum).

  • Review staffing levels of the day to accommodate the schedule by reviewing overtime and schedule changes for staff and approving them with Nurse Manager.

  • Responsible and accountable for assisting to ensure that cases run on schedule.Supports staff in their areas of responsibility to effectively turn rooms around while providing optimal patient care.

  • Familiar with and able to perform duties of all staff personnel in the OR:
  • Maintains clinical skills to be able to perform competently in all specialty areas.

  • Understands OR scheduling system

  • Revise and print preference cards

  • Rearrange cases and adjust times as appropriate

  • Perform audit trail on cases to assess case history

  • Add information to booked cases

  • Demonstrates professional accountability:

  • Performs competently in emergencies.

  • Supports hospital and department policies and procedures.

  • Supports hospital and departmental philosophies and goals.

  • Assists the Nurse Manager with the implementation of policies and procedures and monitors compliance of staff.

  • Makes appropriate decisions based on criteria established by the Nurse Manager.

  • Actively participates and promotes problem solving (i.e., at staff meetings, in the clinical area, etc.)

  • Recognizes when issues or problems need to be discussed with the Nurse Manager.

  • Assists Nurse Manager and/or completes performance evaluation of staff.

  • Plans time away from work appropriately

  • Arrives and leaves at designated times.

  • Uses unplanned earned time appropriately (Based on full time hours.Standards are pro-rated for part-time employees based on agreed hours). 

  • Performs other duties as required.

  • Attends annual safety review

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  1. Maintains a CNIV status on the clinical ladder.
  2. Leadership ability required.

LICENSE, CERTIFICATION REQUIRED:  Certification (CNOR) preferred.  Bachelors Degree Required, Current MA license.

LIFE SUPPORT CERTIFICATION REQUIRED:  None Required

AGE SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS: Maintains competencies (position specific and hospital-wide) required for the specific patient population served.

PHYSICAL, MENTAL, AND VISUAL REQUIREMENTS:

1.   Ability to use computer.

2.   Ability to communicate in writing and orally.

3.   Ability to proofread documents and check for accuracy.

OSHA EXPOSURE:  The nature of the tasks/responsibilities required of employees in this position will likely expose them to blood and bodily fluids.  Employees will be oriented to and required to understand and follow the universal precautions for infection control.
